Now let’s take a look at the types of Jamaican passports and how you can renew yours if it’s expiring soon.

Types of Jamaican Passports:

Official Passports: Issued to other government personnel representing Jamaica abroad.

Adult Ordinary Passports: Issued to any Jamaican over the age of 18.

Minor Ordinary Passports: Issued to Jamaican citizens under 18 years old.

Diplomatic Passports: Issued to government officials involved in international affairs.

How to Renew Your Jamaican Passport (Even While Abroad)

Passports have an expiration date, and once expired, you won’t be able to travel internationally until it’s renewed. But what happens if you’re living or working overseas? No worries—renewing your Jamaican passport from abroad is a straightforward process.

  1. Visit a PICA Office or your nearest Jamaican Overseas Consulate/Embassy/Mission.
  2. You can get the necessary forms and requirements on PICA’s website: pica.gov.jm.
  3. If your passport is the old Handwritten Blue version, you must renew it in person.

Note for Overseas Applicants

If you’re applying for a visa while abroad, you might be asked to submit a police record. To apply for one, you can visit the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) website and check the section for overseas applicants: jcf.gov.jm/police-certificate/.

Quick Visa Overview

Here’s a rundown of the most common visa types for Jamaican travellers:

Tourist Visa

This visa is for short trips where you’ll be sightseeing, vacationing, or visiting family/friends. It’s often valid for 30-60 days, and in some cases, you can apply for a multiple-entry visa, which allows you to leave and re-enter the country multiple times during its validity.

Student Visa

For studying abroad, you’ll need a student visa. First, you must apply to and be accepted by a school in the destination country. After that, you can apply for a student visa to stay there during the course of your studies.

Work Visa

If you’re planning to work abroad, you’ll need a work visa. Employers will usually assist you in securing the proper documents to make the application process smoother.

Business Visa

Heading abroad for a business meeting or conference? A business visa is required, but it won’t allow you to earn an income or work for a local company in the destination country.
